Choosing a main door is one of the biggest decisions when you build a house. For years, teak and other wooden doors were the only option. Today many families in Tamil Nadu choose GI steel doors instead. Here is how the two compare.
1. Strength and security
A galvanized steel door has a steel body and frame, and R2 doors use a multi-point lock that locks the door at several places along the frame. This makes it much harder to force open than a typical wooden door with a single lock.
2. Termites
Termites are one of the most common reasons wooden doors fail. Steel doors contain no wood, so termites simply cannot damage them.
3. Rain, humidity and weather
Wooden doors absorb moisture. In the monsoon they swell and become hard to close, and in summer they shrink and crack. A GI steel door does not swell, warp or crack, so it keeps closing smoothly every season.
4. Maintenance
Wood needs regular polishing to keep its colour. R2 steel doors have a UV-protected wooden finish, so they keep their look without polishing.
5. Fire safety
Steel does not burn, which adds an extra layer of safety compared to a wooden door.
6. Looks
Modern steel doors come with a realistic wooden texture and designs, so you get the traditional look of a wooden door with the strength of steel.
7. The environment
Every steel door used instead of a timber door means less wood is needed. At R2 we have also planted over 10,000 trees.
So which should you choose?
If you want a main door that is secure, termite-proof and maintenance-free while still looking like wood, a GI steel door is the better choice for most homes, villas, farm houses and offices.
